How You Can Help

While scientists are working to restore abalone via hatchery-based efforts, YOU can do several things to help:

  • Harvesting even a single abalone is illegal. Please don't do it - you could contribute to the local extinction of a species.
  • Report poaching (anonymously)
    In Washington: 877-933-9847
    In B.C.: 800-465-4336
  • If you enjoy the taste of abalone and are inclined to order it or buy it, make sure that it was raised legally and sustainably, not harvested from the wild.
  • If you see aggregations of abalone while diving or you see any unusual or spawning behavior, contact Don Rothaus, a shellfish biologist for WDFW (rothadpr@dfw.wa.gov)
  • Do not move or disturb abalone – they are very susceptible to injury.
  • Report sightings at REEF (www.reef.org).
  • Check back to this site, as it will be updated.
